⇨Fly, fly away ; Travelling has had many different meanings for me throughout various stages of my life. When I was young, travelling was an interesting experience. Taking the aeroplane, watching the magical take-off from the window seat, having meals on board, treating turbulences as roller coaster rides, visiting new places, trying different things, staying in a posh hotel. It all seemed so incredible, so awesome. And I couldn't wait to fly again. When I grew a little older, travelling was an opportunity to learn. Trying to apply science to the take-off while watching it from the window seat, observing the airline crew and their way of operation, wondering what caused turbulence in a flight, learning a country's culture and history, finding a sense of appreciation and belonging to Singapore and my family, learning how to manage my free time in my itinerary. It was such a rare opportunity to learn and I'll be so overwhelmed after every trip. And I couldn't wait to fly again. But now as I've reached a pre-adult age, travelling has become an escapism. Escapism from the cruel reality I'm starting to face in this world. I begin to want to travel further and over a longer period of time. Observing the take-off from the window seat again, this time longing to stay up in the air, marvelling at the amazing sight of the clouds and the lovely shade of blue spread across the sky. Travelling helped me escape from the fact that my family isn't that bonded anymore. Travelling helped me escape from my mandatory routine of school and work and sleep. Travelling helped me escape from my oppressing deadlines and terrifying assignments. Travelling took me to another universe, a paradise. When I come back, it's like awakening from the most wonderful dream of my life. And I can't wait to fly again ; |
